Treasures & Trash Sale, Saturday, November 19, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Back by popular demand, the sale (formerly partnered with the Arts and

Crafts Bazaar) will stand alone this year. If you’re cleaning out, pack up your

gently used household items, sporting goods, linens, jewelry and collectibles (almost

anything except clothes and shoes) and bring them to the Center 4 Life at 2401

Library Way. The center will store them until the big sale. This event is open to

all and benefits the center. For more information, call the center or Mary Ann

Gilhooley, 472-3565.

Attention Artists & Crafters! Holiday Bazaar, Saturday, November 12, from

9 a.m. to 1 pm. The center is looking for more people to sell their handcrafted

items. The cost is $20 per table for members ($25 for non-members) to be part of

this event, which also benefits the center – participants get to keep all their proceeds.

In the past, this sale was part of the bazaar but is a separate event this year.

Many artists and craftspeople are returning from last year’s bazaar, but more are

needed. Anyone interested can contact Eileen Kehow, 414-405-9556, or via email

at ekkehoe@aol.com.

Please do not disturb nesting sea turtles. There have been reports of several nesting attempts disturbed by onlookers. If a turtle fails after several nesting attempts, she will eject her eggs into the Gulf, so failed attempts -- false crawls -- are serious.

Estimate of Captiva Property Value Released
17 June 11 12:37 PM

The Lee County Property Appraiser’s Office has released an estimate of $1,282 million for the 2011 total assessed value for nonexempt property on Captiva.

After several years of a nationwide decline in property values, the values on Captiva may be leveling off to slightly higher, according to the preliminary estimate from the property

appraiser’s office. By comparison, the final assessed values for Captiva property in 2010 was $1.289 billion, a difference of about $6 million to 7 million.

The taxable value on the 2011 tax roll is still a work in progress and the more complete number will be provided with the certification of taxable value (DR-420)

scheduled to be issued by July 1 by the property appraiser. This more finalized number will be used for purposes of budget preparation and proposed millage rates,

said Mike Mullins, chairman, Captiva Erosion Prevention District (CEDP).  Discussion of the CEPD budget was to be held at the regular monthly board

meeting on June 15. CEPD budget public hearings will be held on September 8 and September 22 at the ‘Tween Waters Inn.

There will be a Beach Brief e-mailed by the CEPD in early September.

Turtle, Tortoises and Terrapins
13 June 11 10:47 AM

There are 15 species of turtles documented  for Sanibel and Captiva. These include sea turtles, ornate diamondback terrapins, Florida box turtles, and gopher tortoises. The Sanibel-

Captiva Conservation Foundation does sea turtle nest monitoring in the summer, counts gopher tortoise burrows in October, and does surveys in its protected wetlands for the other fresh water turtle species.

Learn about the diamondback terrapins that live in the mangroves that were once eaten in turtle soup. Jewel , Gem, and Handsome are swimming in their own 220-gallon tank. Watch Lucky, the softshell turtle, inhale her food like a vacuum cleaner while snorkeling in her tank. Meet Happy the five-year-old snapping turtle. Alice the gopher tortoise is back in her summer burrow behind the nature center. Join SCCF on Tuesday, June 14 at 10 a.m. to learn more about the Turtles, Tortoises, and Terrapins of Sanibel and Captiva. Following a PowerPoint presentation, everyone will tour the live tanks. Cost of the program is $5 for adult non-members, and free for SCCF members and children. Call 472-2329 for more information.

Calusa Blueway Photo Contest
10 June 11 10:04 AM

Lee County Parks & Recreation has launched its fourth annual Calusa Blueway Photo Contest for boaters, kayakers and nature enthusiasts. Entries can be submitted from now until October, with prizes awarded at the annual Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival presented by Canoe & Kayak magazine in November.

A fourth category has been added this year, allowing photographers to be even more creative. Other categories include: paddlers on the trail (people enjoying the waterways), nature photography (flora, fauna and landscapes) and signs on the blueway (Calusa Blueway markers and others that water-lovers encounter).

Prizes for top category winners will come from ABC Framing, a Lehigh Acres-based mobile-framing business that is the contest’s sponsor. Winners will receive an enlarged, matted and framed version of their photos. Winning entries also will be published in magazines, newspapers and online products.
